Beyond Counting

Sharon Scheenstra

Sarah's Tent

Genesis 24:67

Beyond counting

the times Abram parted these flaps

to lie with lovely Sarai.

The sweet sighs of her pleasure

in the thrusts,

in the pressure,

in the bursting release of the seed, of the treasure.

Limbs entwined they slept deep

the sleep of children

promised.

Beyond counting

the flocks and herds

that mount and procreate

beyond this tent

under stars beyond counting.

Beyond counting

the prayers rising,

comprising intervals of tears

and drops of blood.

Beyond counting

the hopes that rose

blood-red resilient

month after month,

rising like mist

that evaporates in the heat of the day

until there’s nothing left

but helpless

laughter.
